If you venture a bit off the beaten track on your Bali holiday, you’ll find a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jatiluwih Rice Terrace. Sitting in rural serenity, these rice terraces comprise over 600 hectares of rice fields, flowing on the hillside of the Batukaru Mountain Range.

The Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is about a two-hour drive from the main tourist destinations, including Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, and the capital Denpasar. You will find the rice fields in the Jatiluwih Village in the Penebel District of the Tabanan Regency.
Even though the UNESCO Site is somewhat “in the middle of nowhere,” there are plenty of ways to reach the Bali Rice Terrace.
By Car
It’s easy and relatively inexpensive to rent a private car with a driver in Bali. Having a private driver is a convenient way of getting around the island because you won’t have to deal with the traffic or road conditions. What’s more, it will allow you to make stops wherever you like and explore Bali to your heart’s content.

If you truly want to understand the significance of the rice terraces, irrigation systems, and local culture, you should consider joining an organized tour. It will probably cost more than hiring a driver, but you will have a guide to walk you through the entire experience.

During your Bali holiday, you might notice many tourists and locals driving scooters. However, while riding a scooter might be a good way to explore Bali, it’s not always recommended for a visit to Jatiluwih.
The roads there are not well-maintained and the driving standards are not quite up-to-par. That means, even if you’re an experienced rider, you might struggle to cope with the conditions. It’s also somewhat difficult to be road-legal, but without it, your insurance will be invalid.
The best time to plan your day trip to Jatiluwih Green Land is when everything is growing and thriving during Bali’s rainy season between February and April. You’ll also get the ultimate experience if you go at sunrise because the fields look majestic during dawn.
If you arrive during the dry season, you will likely see brown and muddy fields. However, if you get there during harvest in May and June, you will learn a lot about the local agricultural system, but won’t see the fields in full bloom.
If you’re staying in Jatiluwih Green Land Village, you will be able to access the rice fields and paddies all day long. However, you might not want to go during the night as there’s often no electric lighting and there are many snakes around.
If you’re staying somewhere else and just visiting the fields, you will be able to visit the fields from 8 AM to 6 PM. Keep in mind that the last time to access the terraces is at 5 PM.
The Jatiluwih entrance fee is 40,000 IDR or AUD 3.7 and it covers the whole Jatiluwih Green Land. If you’ve driven there, you might also be asked to pay 5,000 IDR to park. Keep in mind that they only accept cash payments and may not have change for larger bills, so come prepared as it’s a long way from any ATMs.
In addition to taking some amazing photos and making incredible memories, there is much to do at Jatiluwih rice fields.
If you’re there during the rice growing season, the best thing to do is to take a long stroll among the rice plants. That way, you can appreciate the tropical climate and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, while seeing how the village cooperatives work. There are organized treks in the area if you prefer being in a group, but you can also go by yourself.
If you prefer, you can arrange a cycling tour of the area. Check the Bali Res Centre for a mountain bike and enjoy a safe and peaceful tour of the fields.
The Yeh Hoo and Jatiluwih Waterfalls are close to each other and easily accessible. Yeh Hoo is the better-known of the two and has a pleasant pool where you can take a quick dip.
A great way to immerse yourself in the local culture is by wandering into the local villages. However, keep in mind that the locals only tend to speak Balinese and you might not be able to communicate with them easily.
Opened in the 1980s, the Subak Museum helps tourists better understand how the irrigation system here works. As the museum is sometimes temporarily closed, make sure you check ahead of time to ensure you can get in.
Jatiluwih is one of the many rice terraces in Bali, with Tegallalang in Ubud being the most popular one. Located right in the centre of Ubud, it’s only a short drive from the town centre and easily accessible.
The Tegallalang rice terraces are truly magnificent, featuring suspension bridges and walkways that allow exploration. However, given its good location and beautiful scenery, it often gets very crowded and might not provide the serene experience you might be hoping for.
If you have the time and are feeling more adventurous, there are many attractions nearby to check out. One of the most popular attractions is the Angseri Hot Spring, which is inexpensive, uncrowded, and a memorable experience.
The Pura Luhur Temple is also a great place if you want to do a simple mountain trek. You could also check out the TASTA Tabanan Wildlife Park, which is a small local zoo that participates in local conservation programs. Finally, if you love windmills and flowers, check out The Blooms Garden.
